केरल के वायनाड में बांदीपुर टाइगर रिजर्व से होकर गुजरने वाले राष्‍ट्रीय राजमार्ग-766 पर रात में यातायात प्रतिबंध है और स्‍थानीय लोग इसके खिलाफ हैं करीब एक दशक पहले कर्नाटक हाईकोर्ट ने वन्‍य प्राणियों की सुरक्षा को ध्‍यान में रखते हुए बांदीपुर टाइगर रिजर्व से होकर गुजरने वाले राजमार्ग पर यातायात प्रतिबंध लगाया था..और सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने हाल में वैकल्पिक कट्टा गोनीकप्‍पा मार्ग को ठीक कर टाइगर रिजर्व के हिस्‍से वाले एनएच-766 पर स्‍थायी यातायात प्रतिबंध लगाने की संभावना पर रिपोर्ट मांगी थी. भारत अपनी वन्यजीव आबादी में बढ़ोत्तरी के लिहाज से दुनिया में अग्रणी है. बाघ और एशियाई हाथी का तो भारत सबसे बड़ा ठिकाना माना ही जाता है. लेकिन उसी देश में मनुष्य-पशु संघर्ष वन्यजीव संरक्षण की राह में सबसे बड़ी चुनौती बन गया है.प्राकृतिक संसाधनों पर इंसानी अतिक्रमण से हाथियों के स्वाभाविक कॉरीडोर छिन गए हैं, बाघों और तेंदुओं की बढ़ती आबादी के लिए रहने की जगह और भोजन की किल्लत हो रही है.
